22View art location

In 2008, Fulwell Windmill celebrated its Bi-Centenary celebrations. As part of the closing event an audiovisual spectacular illuminated the windmill. The piece, entitled ‘words from the neighbourhood,’ lit up the windmill with a special film projection.

Artist Nik Barrera worked with year four pupils from Fulwell Junior School, along with adults from the community and the Friends of Fulwell Mill. A series of workshops took place to discuss the windmill and collate letters, dates, events and photographs, which have been used to help create the piece. The artwork depicts periods of the windmills history and key memories from the community. It uses a range of photography, video stills and illustrations provided from the workshops. The artwork explores themes such as the windmill’s history, World War 2, its new and modern
day uses, and the reopening of the windmill.
