The complex design of the gate was developed from geometric shapes and images from Sunderland history, which is typical of Ramshaws work. Born in Sunderland in 1939, the artist learned to draw in the musuem and was awarded an OBE to acknowledge her position as one of Britain's foremost jewellery designers.
