Jack Crawford (1775-1831) was born in Sunderland and served in the navy at the battle of Camperdown. When the British colours were shot away from the flagship he nailed them back to the mast, to ensure that the rest of the fleet did not lose heart.

He returned a hero and was awarded a silver medal and an annual pension of £30. However, Crawford’s fortunes did not continue and he was forced to sell his medal. He died in a Cholera epidemic and is buried in Trinity Churchyard, Sunderland.

How does this art make you feel?
It's telling a story about something I didn't know anything about which is interesting. That's different to modern art as they don't say anything, nothing historical.
