Artists Wolfgang Winter and Berthold Hoerbelt created their work ‘Looking in Facing Out’ for the existing Gas Vents sited close to Sunderland Aquatic Centre.

The artists created two large steel mesh faces in profile that look similar to a trophy or cup. As the viewer sees the face of one sculpture before them, they perceive it as a 360 degree silhouette. In the second sculpture, they will initially only make out the contour of a head, as seen from the back. Only on closer examination will they recognize it as an inward-facing 360 degree silhouette.

The two sculptures add an artistic aspect to this architecturally distinctive area, these sculptures in their monumental form compliments the surrounding area and create a place where people will enjoy and gather.
