Hendon Beach project
Back on the Map is the New Deal for Communities programme for Hendon and the East End of Sunderland. The programme runs from 2001 to 2011 and is delivering improvements to the area in housing and environment, health, community safety, education and employment.
Three artists — photographer Andy Martin, digital artist Lindsay Duncanson and designer Dan Civico were commissioned to come together to explore “Hidden Hendon” with the help of the local community. Lindsay Duncanson has worked with various groups including Hendon Youth Project, Thornhill school’s Tate art group and the Maritime Heritage group. A series of exhibitions and events were hosted within the community where people were asked to bring images and stories of what Hendon meant to them.
From this collaborations a series of postcards and photography exhibitions were held in the community. Artist Dan Civico has developed designs for seating and a viewing point that has been directly influenced by the community engagement.
