Grindon Mews

23View art location

A new community social care facility for people with complex disabilities in Sunderland has been opened. The Grindon Mews facility offers specialist social care and support to adults aged 18 to 65 with profound and multiple learning disabilities. It includes a music room, activity rooms, sensory room, sound-beam room, lounge and a courtyard patio.

Artist Gavin Marshall graduated from Sunderland University in 1999, gaining a BA Hons in Glass & Ceramics, where he also received the Award of Excellence in Architectural Glass. Gavin was commissioned to design a series of glass works throughout the building. Suspended glass and reflective wall panels create works of art that the adults can interact with. The bespoke walnut and glass reception desk was created through collaboration between Gavin and furniture maker Ben Atkinson.
